Our entire health depends on the effectiveness of the gastro-intestinal system to process food, extract nutrients and protect us from invading pathogens.
High quality probiotics and digestive enzymes bring excellent support for the digestive system and are proven to alleviate common digestive problems including acid reflux, bloating, IBS and constipation. They are also valuable for treating conditions such as colitis, Crohn's and Coeliac diseases and are vital as a travelling aid to prevent and treat diarrhoea.
The low nutrient and enzyme content of the Western diet places an enormous strain on the digestive system and this strain shows up as symptoms such as acid reflux, indigestion, bloating and constipation. Left unheeded, these so called "minor" complaints indicate that we are now susceptible to weight gain, premature ageing and illness.
Supplementing with high quality digestive enzymes and probiotics quickly revitalises the whole gastro-intestinal system; digestive problems melt away, immune defenses are boosted and weight loss is encouraged (see below).
The Role of Enzymes in Weight Loss
Dietary enzymes are an essential part of achieving a healthy weight loss. For example Lipase, an enzyme that is abundant in raw foods, digests and metabolizes dietary fats. Since very few of us eat sufficient raw foods, we lack sufficient amounts of this enzyme to digest or burn normal quantities of fat. Dietary fat is then laid down as fat stores instead.
Research shows that overweight people have very low lipase levels and considerable digestive distress, even malabsorption of nutrients such as vitamins A and E. Lipase deficient people are likely to have a tendency towards high cholesterol, a high triglyceride count and difficulty in losing weight. Without the fat splitting anzyme Lipase, fat builds up throughout the body.
Protease is another important dietary enzyme which is required for breaking down proteins and eliminating toxins. Excess toxins are stored in fat making it even more difficult to burn and when it is finally burned, these toxins are released causing water retention and bloating. Adding Protease enzymes to the body helps eliminate these toxins.
Good probiotics confer a wealth of health promoting properties:
L.acidophilus DDS-1 is a "superstrain" and is known to produce the powerful natural antibiotic "acidophilin", proven to strongly inhibit at least 23 pathogenic bacteria, including streptococci, salmonella, staphylococci, pseudomonas, proteus, shigella and E.coli - one of the major culprits of diarrhoea. DDS-1's immunological properties extend also into the very important area of tumour prevention and treatment. It does this by preventing the transformation of nitrates and nitrites into nitrosamines and has been repeatedly proven to inhibit tumour cell proliferation up to 41% in vivo!
DDS-1 has also has the ability to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood as well as produce higher levels of lactase and beta-galactosidase enzymes than most other lactobacilli, helping people with lactose intolerance.
Bifidobacteria are the other most important "friendly" bacteria. Unfortunately the number of these bacteria decreases with age and in individuals with deteriorating health. Several factors can destroy the bifidobacteria "population" of the human intestine, including stress, poor diet, constipation, vaccination, the effects of antibiotic and radiation therapy, climatic variations, immune deficiency, and poor digestion. In these cases, a high-quality bifidobacteria supplement is necessary to keep the colon clean and functioning properly.
L. Bulgaricus DDS-14 mainly known for its role in the production of yoghurt,is a transient lactobacillus that favours the acidification of the small intestine, thus contributing to the creation of an environment inhospitable to pathogenic bacteria, and favourable to acidophilic lactobacilli. In this respect, it is powerfully synergic with DDS1 acidophilus. Bulgaricus DDS-14 produces a very potent natural antibiotic, called Bulgarican. Bulgaricus DDS14 is also very useful for lactose intolerance, thanks to its ability to help digest lactose.
